Olivier rather disingenuously tells me that his family has been making wine in the village of Le Perreon for a few generations. In fact it is for over 400 years; his mother's maiden name is actually Perreon. This is "Cloche Merle" country - for the more literate amongst you - the neighbouring village and surrounding rolling hills and stunning pink light are the setting for the famous book.
If you have any preconceptions about Beaujolais then put them to one side now! Olivier uses no carbonic maceration and looks to extract as much flavour as he can from his 40 year old + Gamay vines. The result is less of the confected fruit that you associate with the region and more of a cru Beaujolais style. His Beaujolais Villages is bursting with ripe jammy fruit and perfect for a spring or summer time lunch. His top wine "Le Perreon" is aged in 5 different oak barrels (each one from a specified French forest and toasted to a particular degree). These impart different flavours to his wines. The resulting blend of the best wines is bottled every year under the "Le Perreon" name and was a favourite from our tastings... intense red and black fruits with a wonderfully long finish. Knocks the socks off many cru Beaujolais.
