Bonarda >>
Argentina's native black grape variety. Expect full reds with blackberries, strawberries and redcurrants on the nose.
Cabernet Sauvignon >>
Blackcurranty and green when young, elegant and supple when older, Cabernet Sauvignon reds are at their most famous as the lead grape (with Merlot and Cabernet Franc) in the clarets of Bordeaux.
Syrah >>
Peppery, blackberry fruit with silky elegance when aged for 5+ years. Syrah is grown in the northern Rhone and all over southern France. Known as Shiraz in the new world.
Mediterranean reds >>
Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mourvedre - blended together in varying amounts - form the back bone of all mediterranean reds from Provence, Southern Rhone, Languedoc and Roussillon. Warm, powerful, black fruits, spicy, savoury and delicious!
Merlot >>
Ripe jammy fruit when young - plums, raspberries and cherries. Most famous on the left bank in Bordeaux and increasingly planted in southern France.
Sangiovese >>
The grape for Chianti in Tuscany. Deep flavours of blackcurrants and ripe morello cherries. Like most Italian wines, Sangiovese is a great food partner and has good acidity levels.
Pinot Noir >>
Light bodied, jammy red fruits when young. Beautiful, perfumed and complex after 8 - 20 years or more. Pinot Noir is planted in many countries but is at its most elusively seductive in its original home of Burgundy.
Gamay >>
Historically revered grape from Beaujolais. Light, raspberry and strawberry flavours when young. Quality wines take on an ethereal, perfumed Pinot Noir quality when older.
Tannat >>
The Tannat grape from Madiran in particular has 2 to 4 times more procyanidins, a key ingredient in helping to lower blood pressure, than any other red wine. Fantastic stuff!
Malbec >>
Deep, concentrated red colour with purple hints. An expressive grape with ripe, fruity aromas of plum and cherry as notes of mineral and sometime chocolate and spice. Grown widely in Argentina and in the Cahors region in the lovely Lot Valley south of the Dordogne in France. It is also one of the six allowed varieties for red Bordeaux blends.
Tempranillo >>
The main grape variety for Rioja reds, sometimes blended with Garnacha and Graciano and even a little of the white grape Viura.
